Doug Manring Reviews

“‘To Be Continued’, an alternate-tuned instrumental on Doug Manring’s self-produced Oasis CD, combines deft picking and slaps, liberal use of artificial harmonics, and behind-the-nut bends. He keeps things moody and contemplative, allowing piquant slides and throaty bends to unfold gracefully. Since 1985 the 36-year-old artist/producer has resided in Tokyo, where he teaches pre-school by day and devotes his evenings to sessions, film work, and occasional television appearances. He writes, ‘I play my guitar tuned C,G,C,G,C,D, low to high, about 80% of the time.’ He stows his Fender Strat, Gibson J-200, and Fender Jazz Bass at Small Wonder Studio.”—Guitar Player

“…the music of Doug Manring crosses cultural barriers to form its own niche between the excesses of endless soloing and limitations of three-chord repetition.”—Rodell Records sampler

“Your (guitar) playing was very good…I found this project to be of high quality.”—John Stix, Guitar for the Practicing Musician

Letters from listeners to my tapes:

“Your approach to drumming continues to amaze, befuddle, confuse, amuse, and please me.”

“You are musiclly brilliant and generally innovative and interesting. By and large, you have a definate knack for keeping a listener engaged with the music; you are truly a musician’s musician.”

From concert audience questionaires:

“Amazing talent…I’m glad I came.”

“Your guitar seems to be alive.”

“The solo guitar pieces resemble the sound of the Shamisen (Japanese stringed instrument)…”

“Fantastic that you’ve come up with your own way of playing…”

From Japan’s Guitar magazine:

“His guitar work is unique, attention-getting…”

“A three-ring circus of tapping (guitar technique)…”

“…he gives 120%…”
